Can a Happy Mummy Really Create a Happy Baby?

Your kids don’t need a perfect mum. They just need a happy one.”

At some point throughout Motherhood (or maybe even before), you probably would have heard that saying ‘happy mummy, happy baby’, right?

Have you ever wondered whether this is actually true or just another one of those parenting myths that society likes to throw out there without even giving it a second thought?

Let’s explore and dig into the science world…

How about we start by rewinding the biological clock a little bit.

Embryologists have claimed that not only is it true that a happy mum creates a happy baby, it actually starts way before a woman even conceives.

Just think about that for a second.

Embryologists are saying that a mum’s happiness (or lack of) has a direct impact on her unborn child even before the point of conception!

That COMPLETELY blows my mind!

So, how does it all work?

Well, to begin with, the way we view the world triggers physical changes in the chemicals (and levels thereof) inside our body.

For example, if we experience stress on a regular basis, this releases a lot of cortisol in our body. Consequently, the increased levels of cortisol triggers all sorts of internal adverse reactions which can lead to diseases like cancer and other mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety (see Power of our Thoughts).

It’s all to do with how nature works.

In the first 8 weeks following conception, a mother’s body is busy creating the embryo’s basic human structure, i.e. arms, legs, etc. It does this using the genes from both the mother and father.

Once the basic human structure is in place, it then needs to be filled out in order to function.

Think of it like a computer. Once the hardware is all put together, the computer needs software in order to be useful.

So, going back to the growing fetus, once the body parts are in place, nature is constantly reading data and information [literally] through the mother’s eyes.

EVERYTHING that the mother sees and thinks about the environment and the world around her will ultimately shape how her baby will perceive it.

We already know how powerful a woman’s body is to physically create a baby in the first place, but the fact that a mother’s perception and thoughts can MASSIVELY impact her baby is absolutely extraordinary!

Now, let’s take a look at blood. Don’t worry, no gory images here (I’d pass out too!).

Old science showed that only nutrition from the mother’s blood flowed down to the baby via the placenta.

However, new science shows that it’s more than just nutrition that is passed down through blood.

Blood, in all humans, generally holds information on our emotions, hormones and other growth factors which determine the life we live. This information passes down to the baby the same way nutrition does.

So what does that mean?

That means, if the mother is happy then the fetus is happy because the same chemistry of emotions that affect the mother’s system are crossing into the fetus*. The same principle applies if the mother is stressed.

Studies also suggest that up to 50% of the child’s personality may be developed before the baby is even born.

For all you mum’s, soon-to-be-mum’s and future mum’s, let this remind you just how INFLUENTIAL, INCREDIBLE and IMPORTANT you are to your little born and unborn humans!

YOUR mental strength is transmitted to your baby and this is an extraordinary thing!

But let’s also get one thing clear. This is not to undermine dad’s in any way, as they, too, play an extremely crucial part in their child’s development. In fact, a child needs its father especially in its early years to be able to thrive to his/her optimum level throughout life. Click here to find out what impact a father has on his child.
